"Mons Sanctus", the story of Its time

#historiasademonsanto

"A sanctuary of singular charm.
Rising from the hillside.
Inhabited by barbarians, Visigoths and Arabs, defeated in 1165 by D. Afonso Henriques, Christ held close to his chest.

To this place we owe a great heritage.

But in the early 18th century, the threat once again fell upon Monsanto, during a siege.

The Portuguese people, with the cross upon their chests, fearless and unyielding, defeated the enemy.

In the month of May, the successive acts of resistance against the invaders are celebrated, in honour of the Divine Holy Cross."

Rising among granite crags, it offers a unique setting that blends history, architecture, and breathtaking landscapes

Singular arquitecture

It stands out for its narrow streets and houses built amid enormous blocks of granite, creating a singular harmony between architecture and nature.

In Monsanto, houses emerge from the granite boulders themselves: many were built beneath, within, or atop enormous rocky formations, creating a stunning harmony between human architecture and the natural environment – a living testament to ingenuity and adaptation.
