Culture and traditions
"Mons Sanctus", the story of Its time
#ashistoriasaquidemonsanto
A sanctuary of singular charm, emerging from the hillside, inhabited since the Paleolithic era — by barbarians, Visigoths, and Arabs, who were defeated “with Christ on their chest” in 1165 by Dom Afonso Henriques.
To him, we owe this great heritage.
The castle was built by the hands of the Templars, under the guidance of Dom Gualdim Pais.

Rising among granite crags, it offers a unique setting that blends history, architecture, and breathtaking landscapes
Singular arquitecture
It stands out for its narrow streets and houses built amid enormous blocks of granite, creating a singular harmony between architecture and nature.
In Monsanto, houses emerge from the granite boulders themselves: many were built beneath, within, or atop enormous rocky formations, creating a stunning harmony between human architecture and the natural environment – a living testament to ingenuity and adaptation.
